lipgloss Thursday, January 28, 2010 11:34 PM

PRODUCT
estee lauder pure color crystal lipgloss in candy

PRICE
$18.00 | The Bay

THOUGHTS
One of my favourite beauty products is lipgloss. So when I got this Estee Lauder gloss as a Christmas gift, I was super excited to give it a try. Although I already have a stash of lipgloss, I am always welcoming another one – especially a high-end one.

USAGE
The first thing that I noticed about the gloss was the bright, saturated colour of pink, named ‘Candy’. It was a fun and flirty (excuse the cliché) colour. The tube, an attractive gold applicator with a see-through base, reflects the good-quality of the product. The texture of the gloss is on the heavy side, and a bit sticky. The colour is great – not over-powering, but statement-making. The sheerness is nice, it’s not opaque, but definitely far from transparent. But what I enjoy the best is the taste, it tastes and even smells sweet!

VERDICT
The slight shimmer plus the intense shine makes this lipgloss a perfect choice for those night-outs. Matched with the loud colour, it won’t disappoint in drawing attention to the lips! Although I didn’t really like the texture, a little too sticky, it overall was a good product that delivers that ‘glossy’ look. The price is on the deep-end and may be a turn-off, but considering that it’s a high-end lipgloss, the accompanying pricetag must be expected. Overall, I dig this product.

tweezers 11:31 PM
PRODUCT
tweezerman professional slant tweezers

PRICE
$33.00 | Shoppers Drug Mart

THOUGHTS
I cannot exaggerate how long I’ve wanted a pair of Tweezerman tweezers. Hyped up by beauty awards and beauty junkies, this must-have product has been on my to-buy list for a long time. It promises to remove the most stubborn hair, and backed-up with a lifetime warranty and free sharpening, this product embodies good-quality tweezers. So that’s why when ‘Secret Santa’ came around, Tweezermans was the only gift on my wish list.

USAGE
The exact pair of Tweezermans that I received was the Slant Tweezers in Zebra. The feel of the tweezers in hand is comfortable, and the tweezers itself is good size. The tension is also well-adjusted, and can be set even tighter by simply pulling it out. The Tweezerman’s tip is well defined – it is the sharpest and most precise tweezers I have ever used. It effortlessly pull out the exact hair that I want it to without having to try multiple times. It’s easy to tell that Tweezerman tweezers are seriously good-quality.

VERDICT
Overall, I love my Tweezermans – I can never use any other tweezers but these from now on. I think it is definitely worth all the credit it has earned as a beauty essential. Because it is so sharp however, I wouldn’t recommend Tweezermans for a beginner. Moreover, Tweezermans are quite pricey considering they are only tweezers, however it must be realized that the price doesn’t only reflect the product itself, but the warranty as well. In conclusion, I dig this product.

eyeshadow 11:27 PM
PRODUCT
lancome ombre absolue in radiant smoothing

PRICE
$54.00 | The Bay

THOUGHTS
Receiving this eyeshadow palette as a gift, I was excited about the high-end luxury that Lancome always delivers. However, the colours included two finishes (shimmery and matte) jade, were not ones I would’ve chosen. The two finishes of ivory that the palette included however, I adored. I don’t wear eyeshadow on the daily, so when I do for an event, I need colours that will satisfy the occasion, something I doubted this palette could do.

USAGE
The first thing I noticed when I applied these eyeshadows was the texture. Despite being a shadow, they possessed a wonderfully creamy feeling, which I enjoy. They worked almost in layers – one sweep of shadow provided light colour, several sweeps intensified the colour. Personally, I feel as though this feature implies high-end shadow versus low-end ones with screaming opaqueness. Contrary to when I first received the palette, I immediately fell in love with the colours upon wearing. Not only are they great stand-alone colours, meaning wearing the colours individually is nice enough, when worn all together, they provide a beautiful look. On top of all of this, when I wore the shadows with eye primer, they endured a heavy night of sweating, which frankly I did not expect – but greatly appreciated.

VERDICT
Overall, I can’t say one bad thing about the actual product. Colours: love. Texture: love. Quality: love. A slight improvement that I can recommend would be the packaging. Although the shadows are encased in the classic Lancome look, I feel as though if the case was done with a little extra oomph, it would grab the attention of first-time users, like myself, immediately. However, this is only a minor downside which really has no consequence on the product. In conclusion, I dig this product.

hair removal 11:16 PM
PRODUCT
veet rasera bladeless kit hair removal cream

PRICE
Reg. $8.99 - On Sale $5.00 | Winners

THOUGHTS
I've never been a user of any other hair removal product than Nair, I've been very loyal to Nair Hair Removal Cream for good reason - effectiveness combined with price is a must-have beauty product. But lately, a couple of people have been recommending Veet to me. This product promises to remove hair in three minutes, with a razorless blade - which is very tempting to me because I don't believe in shaving anywhere besides the calves and underarms. So when I saw that it was on sale for five bucks, I knew that that was a sign I should give it a try.

USAGE
The first thing I noticed about this product was the scent - unlike Nair, this scent wasn't as strong-smelling. The texture is a lighter feel than Nair, somewhat like mousse. It applies relatively well across the skin, and comes off as easily too. The razorless blade really aids in the removal of hair, making it easier than using a loofah to scrub off the product, which can be sometimes damaging to the skin. However, in comparaison to Nair, this product doesn't seem to remove the hair as well, probably because it shaves the hair rather than completely dissolve it. The promise of removing hair in three minutes is true - even dark, stubborn hair like mine.

VERDICT
Overall I enjoyed this product - it quickly removed hair, so fast that I barely had enough time to do both my forearms before washing it off. Although it doesn't provide hair removal as well as Nair, it was pretty effective considering the amount of time it took to apply, leave-on and remove the product (less than ten minues). In conclusion, I dig this product.

mascara 10:08 PM
PRODUCT
maybelline the colossal volum' express mascara

PRICE
$6.93 | Walmart

THOUGHTS
When I first started to see this mascara around, I was immediately attracted to the bright yellow tube. Moreover, injected with collagen, this mascara is supposed to 'plump' lashes, a first in mascara. I naturally have long lashes, but I was looking for a mascara which provided lashes with curl and volume, so Colossal, with the promise of 9x more volume, seemed like the way to go.

USAGE
The wand - which gives this mascara it's name - is truly colossal. Loaded with bristles, the applicator itself implies fullness. Because of the collagen, the mascara has a nice consistency; not liquid-y, but not clumpy either. However, because of how big the wand is, sometimes separation of lashes becomes a problem and clumps do result. Moreover, this mascara is very flakey - by day's end flakes are always found along my bottom lashes, sometimes even on the tops of my cheecks! It requires several coats to acheive a desirable look, however I do admit that I have yet to use a mascara that doesn't.

VERDICT
Although pretty on the outside, this product ultimately fails to deliver. Considering the hype of this product, I was not impressed. The price was not bad, however it's not cheap enough to justify the product. The only thing I can truly appreciate about this mascara is the one thing that doesn't matter - the casing. Overall, I ditch this product.

moisturizer 9:01 PM
PRODUCT
sally hansen smooth glow stubble reducing daily moisturizer

PRICE
Reg. $5.99 - On Sale $3.00 | Winners

THOUGHTS
I have never been the type of person to mosturize my skin. But lately I've noticed how dry my skin has become, perhaps because of the winter weather, so I decided to take action. The first reason I was attracted to this mosturizer was because of it's promise to slow hair growth - something that sounds too good to be true. Secondly, the hint of colour that it provides, which deepens the more you use the moisturizer, is a huge perk in the winter. Lastly, for the price of only three bucks, how could I not pick it up?

USAGE
The scent of this product is pleasant - a mild coconut which lasts all day. The feel is luxurious, but not sticky nor heavy - which reflects in how nicely it spreads over the skin. After using this product, I immediately noticed a slight tint of my skin tone, which I naturally appreciated. However, I haven't really noticed any difference between the time intervals for hair removal - the promise of 'stubble reducing' doesn't seem to be that true . Most important are the moisturizing powers this lotion contains; which are strong - almost like body butter.

VERDICT
For three bucks, this product is definitely a steal. I truly enjoy the texture and scent of this product - which are key factors when I buy any type of mosturizer. However, one thing it failed to deliver was the ability to prolong hair growth, but as mentioned before, that was one quality that seemed to good to be true. Overall, I dig this product.
